I saw Professor Jeeva today for a consultation regarding lower blephoroplasty. I was made very welcome and put at ease. The procedure was explained to me and I was encouraged to ask as many questions I wanted. I wasn't made to feel rushed or pressured into anything and left feeling that if I do decide to proceed I will be in safe hands.
Alison SmithMy mum Maureen Astles had a Zoom consultation with Mr Jeeva this morning. What a lovely surgeon he was helpful informative and such a nice smile putting her totally at ease. She is now looking forward to meeting him in person for surgery as she knows she will be in the best hands for a successful outcome.
Catherine AstlesI would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr Jeeva, my surgeon and all the doctors and staff at the centre. The care I received from start to finish was exceptional. I felt at ease and was reassured throughout the procedure, feeling safe the entire time. I cannot thank you enough and will definitely be recommending your services to family and friends.
Denise DouthwaiteWhat Is Eyelid Cyst Removal Surgery?
Eyelid cyst removal is a minor oculoplastic procedure used to treat a range of benign eyelid lumps and cysts. It is performed under local anaesthetic in an outpatient setting, with most procedures completed in five to fifteen minutes.
Depending on the type of cyst, your surgeon will use either incision and curettage (for chalazia) or complete excision (for external cysts and skin lesions). Both approaches are carefully chosen to achieve the best result with minimal disruption.
Conditions Treated
- Chalazion: A blocked meibomian gland causing a firm, painless lump on the eyelid
- Sebaceous Cysts: Slow-growing cysts caused by blocked skin glands near the eyelid
- Inclusion Cysts: Small, benign cysts lined with skin cells that form within the eyelid
- Blocked Oil Glands: Persistent gland obstructions causing recurring swelling or discomfort
- Benign Eyelid Lesions: Any eyelid lump requiring specialist assessment and safe removal
When Is Surgical Removal Recommended?
Warm compresses are always the first step for a fresh chalazion, but surgery is appropriate when you are experiencing any of the following:
Professor Jeeva will examine your eyelid and confirm whether surgical removal is the appropriate next step, or whether conservative management should continue.
How Eyelid Cyst Removal Surgery Works
The technique used depends on the type and location of the cyst. Both approaches are quick, comfortable, and performed under local anaesthetic.
Technique 1: Incision & Curettage
For Chalazia · 5–10 minutes
- Step 1 — Local Anaesthetic: The eyelid is numbed with a local anaesthetic injection for complete comfort
- Step 2 — Eyelid Eversion: A small clamp gently everts the eyelid to access the inner surface
- Step 3 — Incision: A small incision is made on the inside of the eyelid
- Step 4 — Curettage: The cyst contents are carefully removed using a curette
- Step 5 — No External Scar: The incision is on the inner lid surface, leaving no visible external scar
Technique 2: Excision
For External Cysts & Skin Lesions · 5–10 minutes
- Step 1 — Small Incision: A precise external incision is made directly over the cyst
- Step 2 — Complete Removal: The cyst is removed in one piece to prevent recurrence
- Step 3 — Closure: Micro-sutures are used where needed, or the wound is left to heal naturally

Eyelid Cyst Removal FAQs
No. A small injection of local anaesthetic numbs the eyelid completely before any incision is made. You may feel mild pressure during the procedure, but pain is not expected. We take time to ensure you are fully comfortable before we begin.
In most cases, the incision is made on the inner surface of the eyelid (the conjunctival approach), which leaves no visible scar on the skin. Where a skin-side approach is necessary, the incision is small and heals to a fine line within a few weeks.
Chalazia can occasionally recur, particularly if the underlying meibomian gland dysfunction is not addressed. Professor Jeeva will advise on lid hygiene and warm compress routines to reduce this risk and will discuss any predisposing factors identified during your consultation.
Most patients with desk-based roles return to work within one to three days. You should avoid strenuous activity, swimming, or dusty environments for at least one week. Your surgeon will confirm a personalised timeline based on the extent of the procedure.
Multiple cysts can be addressed in a single session where clinically appropriate. Professor Jeeva will examine all affected areas at your consultation and plan the procedure accordingly, prioritising comfort and complete resolution.
