Read About Our Happy Patients

I saw Professor Jeeva today for a consultation regarding lower blephoroplasty. I was made very welcome and put at ease. The procedure was explained to me and I was encouraged to ask as many questions I wanted. I wasn't made to feel rushed or pressured into anything and left feeling that if I do decide to proceed I will be in safe hands.

Alison Smith

My mum Maureen Astles had a Zoom consultation with Mr Jeeva this morning. What a lovely surgeon he was helpful informative and such a nice smile putting her totally at ease. She is now looking forward to meeting him in person for surgery as she knows she will be in the best hands for a successful outcome.

Catherine Astles

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr Jeeva, my surgeon and all the doctors and staff at the centre. The care I received from start to finish was exceptional. I felt at ease and was reassured throughout the procedure, feeling safe the entire time. I cannot thank you enough and will definitely be recommending your services to family and friends.

What Is Upper Eyelid Surgery? (Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty)

As we get older the upper eyelids tend to look heavier and more hooded due to the brow becoming lower but also the excess skin that forms as part of the ageing process.

An upper eyelid lift or blepharoplasty is a simple surgical procedure for both men and women in their mid thirties upwards.

It helps to improve the eye area by removing any excess or hooding skin and in turn opens the eyes giving a more attractive, fresher look that is both younger and less tired in appearance.

Why Choose Upper Blepharoplasty?

Long-Lasting Results

While ageing is a natural process, blepharoplasty results can be long-lasting, often improving the appearance of the upper eyelids for a decade or more.

Minimally Invasive

Compared to traditional surgeries, upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, reducing recovery time and discomfort.

Suitable for Most

Blepharoplasty can be safely performed on most healthy individuals with minimal risk of complications. A consultation with a qualified surgeon is crucial to confirm suitability.

Who Are the Ideal Candidates for Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty?

Ideal candidates for upper eyelid blepharoplasty typically have:

Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid
Impaired vision due to drooping upper eyelid skin
Puffy upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired or aged
Good overall health and realistic expectations about the surgery's outcomes

What to Expect

Upper blepharoplasty is a carefully planned, day-case procedure performed by our specialist oculoplastic team at The Eye Doctor.

Initial Consultation
Assessment

Assessment of the upper eyelid skin, fat distribution, eyelid crease position, and brow position. Visual field testing may be performed to document functional impairment. Photographs taken for surgical planning.

Consultation Details
Thorough Evaluation

Thorough assessment of the degree and pattern of skin excess. Discussion of functional versus cosmetic indication. Brow position assessed — if brow descent is contributing, browpexy may be recommended alongside blepharoplasty.

The Procedure
Anaesthesia

Local anaesthetic administered to ensure complete comfort throughout the procedure.

Marking and Excision

The eyelid crease is marked and a precise ellipse of excess skin (and fat if required) is measured and removed.

Closure

The wound is closed with very fine sutures placed within the crease. The procedure typically takes 45–90 minutes for both eyes.

The Techniques
Skin-Only Excision

Removal of excess skin alone, preserving the underlying muscle and fat — used when fullness is not a concern.

Skin and Fat Excision

Removal of skin and herniated orbital fat to reduce puffiness and improve the eyelid contour.

Combined Browpexy and Blepharoplasty

When brow descent contributes to apparent skin excess, the brow is elevated and secured before the eyelid skin is removed — preventing over-resection.

Functional Blepharoplasty

Performed specifically to address documented visual field obstruction — may qualify for funding pathways through appropriate referral.

Post-Procedure Care
Same-Day Discharge

Patients are discharged the same day. Mild bruising and swelling can be expected for one to two weeks.

Aftercare Instructions
  • Cold compresses applied for the first 48 hours
  • Prescribed antibiotic ointment applied to the wound
  • Sleep with head slightly elevated
  • Avoid rubbing the eyes, strenuous activity, swimming, and heavy lifting for two weeks
Risks and Complications

Upper blepharoplasty is a low-risk procedure in experienced oculoplastic hands. Small risks include bruising, swelling, infection, asymmetry, dry eyes, incomplete closure, and in rare cases over- or under-correction. All risks are discussed in detail during your consultation.

Post-Surgery Follow-Up

Follow-up appointment approximately 7 days post-surgery to review healing and remove sutures. Further appointments are scheduled as needed to monitor the final result.

Benefits of Upper Blepharoplasty

Removes excess skin that creates a hooded, tired appearance
Restores the natural eyelid crease and a more open eye
Improves the upper visual field where hooding obstructs vision
Reduces heaviness and forehead strain from elevated brow compensation
Precise results with scarring hidden within the natural eyelid crease
Suitable as a standalone or combined procedure (with browpexy)
Day-case procedure with a short, manageable recovery
