I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.

I can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.

What is a Corneal Transplant?

A corneal transplant is a procedure used to replace the damaged or cloudy front layer of your eye (the cornea) with healthy donor tissue. When the cornea becomes swollen, scarred, or loses its clarity, your vision can become blurred, distorted, or sensitive to light. This is where corneal transplant surgery helps restore clarity.

With modern techniques like DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty), we replace only the damaged inner layer rather than the entire cornea. This minimally invasive approach delivers excellent visual outcomes with a faster recovery and significantly lower rejection risk than traditional full-thickness transplant.

Our focus is simple: do only what is needed, but do it perfectly.

Why Choose Corneal Transplantation?

You may benefit from corneal transplantation if you are experiencing any of the following:

Blurry or cloudy vision that does not improve with glasses or contact lenses
Swelling in the cornea, commonly seen in conditions such as Fuchs' dystrophy
Corneal scarring caused by infection, injury, or previous surgery
Persistent light sensitivity and glare that disrupts daily life
Difficulty reading, driving, or recognising faces due to corneal distortion
Corneal disease that has progressed beyond what lenses or medication can manage

If your daily life is being affected, a corneal transplant can help you see clearly again. Our consultant will assess your eyes and confirm the most appropriate treatment approach for you.

How Does Corneal Transplant Surgery Work?

During corneal transplant surgery, the damaged part of your cornea is carefully replaced with healthy donor tissue. For advanced procedures like DMEK, only the inner endothelial layer is replaced, preserving as much of your natural cornea as possible.

The surgery is performed under local anaesthetic. A tiny air bubble is used to position the new tissue layer precisely against your cornea, where it attaches naturally over the following days.

The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes. This precise method allows for quicker recovery and better visual results compared to older full-thickness techniques.

01Local anaesthetic applied to numb the eye
02Damaged corneal layer carefully removed
03Ultra-thin donor tissue precisely prepared
04Graft floated gently into position with fluid
05Air bubble holds the graft against the cornea
06Brief rest period, then discharged home

Frequently Asked Questions

Suitability is confirmed after a full eye examination. A corneal transplant is usually recommended when vision cannot be improved with glasses, contact lenses, or medication, and when the cornea is significantly damaged or diseased.

Yes. Modern techniques like DMEK have high success rates and are considered very safe when performed by experienced surgeons. Our consultant will discuss your individual risk profile at your consultation.

The procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes per eye, depending on the technique used and the complexity of your case.

Initial recovery takes a few days to a couple of weeks, but full visual clarity can continue to improve over several weeks to months as the graft settles and stabilises.

In the early stages of corneal disease, drops, contact lenses, or minor procedures such as corneal cross-linking may help. However, when the cornea is significantly damaged or scarred, a transplant is the most effective solution for restoring clear vision.
