An epiretinal membrane, also called a macular pucker, is a thin layer of scar tissue that forms over the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It usually develops as the eye ages and is most common in people over 50.
As the membrane tightens, it wrinkles the retina beneath it. This makes straight lines look wavy and central vision turn blurry, which can make reading and driving difficult.

To restore your vision, Mr Mookhtiar performs a vitrectomy with membrane peel, working through tiny openings in the white of the eye.
Step by Step
Through tiny, self-sealing openings in the white of the eye, he removes the vitreous gel that fills the eye.
He then gently peels the membrane from your macula, releasing the tension so the retina can settle and your sight can improve.
Advanced small-gauge instruments (23G-27G) usually require no stitches, giving a more comfortable recovery.
To keep you relaxed, we offer local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia where appropriate.
