Consultant-led epiretinal membrane removal surgery at The Eye Doctor Clinic in Huddersfield

In plain English

A very thin sheet of scar tissue can form on the surface of the retina and pucker it, which makes straight lines look bent or wavy. Surgery peels that sheet away.

I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.

I can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.

What Is an Epiretinal Membrane?

An epiretinal membrane, also called a macular pucker, is a thin layer of scar tissue that forms over the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It usually develops as the eye ages and is most common in people over 50.

As the membrane tightens, it wrinkles the retina beneath it. This makes straight lines look wavy and central vision turn blurry, which can make reading and driving difficult.

Why Choose Epiretinal Membrane Surgery?

Surgery is not always needed, but we may recommend it if the membrane affects your vision. You may benefit from treatment if you notice:

Straight lines looking wavy or bent
Blurred or distorted central vision
Difficulty reading, even with your glasses
Trouble driving or watching television
A difference in image clarity between your two eyes

Mr Mookhtiar will assess your eyes, symptoms, and scans to confirm whether surgery is the safest step for you.

How Epiretinal Membrane Removal Works

To restore your vision, Mr Mookhtiar performs a vitrectomy with membrane peel, working through tiny openings in the white of the eye.

Step by Step

01

Through tiny, self-sealing openings in the white of the eye, he removes the vitreous gel that fills the eye.

02

He then gently peels the membrane from your macula, releasing the tension so the retina can settle and your sight can improve.

03

Advanced small-gauge instruments (23G-27G) usually require no stitches, giving a more comfortable recovery.

04

To keep you relaxed, we offer local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia where appropriate.
