I had implants with Dr Musa ten years ago. It was the best thing I've ever done. They are brilliant. My sight both near and distant was very poor but since the op I've had no glasses no lenses and my sight has been super. It remains really good to this day. Thank you Dr Musa. Brilliant consultations and treatment for glaucoma since.

I can highly recommend the Eye Doctor Clinic, and I am so pleased I went there. Dr Musa, Gemma and Jess are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and were able to answer all my questions. My vision following surgery is great, and not having to wear glasses is fantastic.

What is SLT Laser Treatment?

Glaucoma is often called the 'silent thief of sight'. It develops when fluid builds up inside the eye and slowly damages the optic nerve, usually because the eye's natural drainage system has become blocked or sluggish. Left unchecked, it can quietly take your side vision before you even notice.

SLT tackles the problem at its source. The treatment uses short, low-energy pulses of laser light to target the tiny drainage tissue inside your eye, known as the trabecular meshwork. Rather than burning or cutting anything, the laser gently stimulates your body's own healing response, so fluid leaves the eye more easily and the pressure inside your eye falls.

This laser works exclusively with pigment-containing cells without harming adjacent tissues, which is why doctors often refer to SLT as a 'cold laser' procedure. The treatment is fast, repeatable, and considered one of the most effective first-choice therapies for open-angle glaucoma.

Why Choose SLT Laser Treatment?

SLT laser may be a brilliant option for you if:

You have been diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (raised eye pressure)
Your eye drops sting, cause irritation, or leave your eyes red and uncomfortable
You find it hard to keep up with a daily drop routine
You would rather reduce or avoid long-term medication
Your current drops are not lowering your pressure enough on their own
You want a first-line treatment backed by strong clinical research

Your consultant will check your eye pressure, optic nerve and visual fields before confirming whether SLT is the safest path forward for you.

How Does SLT Laser Treatment Work?

SLT is a calm outpatient procedure performed right here in our clinic, and the laser itself usually takes only around five minutes per eye. Here is exactly what happens.

Step by Step

01

Anaesthetic drops are placed on the surface of your eye, so you stay completely comfortable throughout.

02

A special contact lens rests gently against your eye to focus the laser precisely on the drainage angle.

03

The laser delivers short, low-energy pulses to the pigmented drainage cells in the trabecular meshwork.

04

Those pulses trigger your eye's natural healing response, refreshing how the drainage tissue works.

05

Over the following days and weeks, fluid drains more freely and your internal eye pressure steadily drops.

06

You head home the same day, with no incisions, no stitches and no overnight stay.

SLT Laser Consultation Process

We believe in a no-pressure approach. We design your journey to be as smooth and transparent as the vision we aim to protect.

01

03

Your Treatment Day

The procedure is fast and refined, usually taking only a few minutes per eye. We use numbing drops to keep you comfortable and follow a minimum-intervention approach, doing exactly what is needed while you relax in our care.

Frequently Asked Questions

SLT stands for Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty. It is a gentle laser therapy that stimulates your eye's natural drainage system to lower intraocular pressure, helping protect your sight from glaucoma.

No. We numb your eye with anaesthetic drops first, so you stay comfortable throughout. Most people feel nothing more than mild flashes of light during the few minutes of treatment.

The laser itself usually takes only around five minutes per eye, and you will be in and out of the clinic the same day.

SLT does not work instantly. The pressure-lowering effect builds gradually over the following days and weeks, which is why we schedule follow-up checks to confirm it has settled at the right level.

The drops used during treatment can temporarily blur your vision, so we recommend arranging a lift home on the day of treatment. Your consultant will confirm when your vision meets the legal standard: you must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres.
